On April 18th and 23rd, Valiantys took part in the Atlassian Roadtrip in London and Paris. What is an Atlassian RoadTrip? It is an event organized by Atlassian in several cities around the world allowing customers to meet their favourite software publisher. If you couldn’t make it to these events, here is a small summary of what was presented by Atlassian.

roadtrip

This 2013 edition of Atlassian RoadTrip began with a presentation by Daniel Freeman (VP of Product Marketing) about what Atlassian had been up to during the last year:

  • Building of the Marketplace, which increased plugins visibility for Atlassian tools helped end-users to try and buy plugins.
  • Acquisition of HipChat, instant messaging solution for the enterprise, integrated of course with the rest of the Atlassian range.
  • Development of a Windows version of Sourcetree to manage your Git and Mercurial repositories.
  • Release of Confluence 5 and 5.1.
  • Release of JIRA 5.1 and 5.2.

The next presentation was called « JIRA  Behind the scenes » and explained the organization of Atlassian to develop their well-known tool, JIRA. We won’t describe the whole presentation which was quite extensive and included interviews of the JIRA Dev team members, but there are a few interesting points which stood out.

JIRA represents 4 million lines of code and is being worked on by a team of 74 staff. Among them, they only have 4 QAs! How are they able to manage such an application with so few QA people? They simply make developers sensible to QA everyday work using an ingenious process. For example, from time to time, a developer will spend one month with the QA team. QA people will shadow developers for a short time (30 min) to review code together and make sure they follow quality guidelines.

The end of the Atlassian RoadTrip was mostly socialising between customers, experts and the Atlassian team around a nice buffet. If you wish to participate in events like this, you will have to wait one year for the return of Atlassian or you can come to San Francisco for the Summit which will be held from October 1st to the 3rd. Valiantys will be pleased to welcome you there.
